First International Conference of the Oficina de História-Mozambique

“Samora Machel in History: Memory, Education & Popular Culture”

Fortaleza de Maputo

October 28-29, 2016

The Oficina de História-Mozambique is an academic and cultural group whose objective is to share with the academic community scientific research and  projects led by academics, experts, students, and local historians. We also welcome international professionals researching Mozambique and African history.

As part of its annual activities, the Oficina de História-Mozambique is organizing its first annual, international, and multidisciplinary conference. The theme for this year’s conference is “Samora Machel in History: Memory, Education & Popular Culture”. The goal of the conference is to reflect on the historical legacy of Samora Machel throughout Mozambique’s contemporary history. The event will be held from October 28th to the 29th in Fortaleza de Maputo, Mozambique.

The organizing committee welcomes individual papers, thematic panels and roundtables on any of the following themes:

·  Samora Machel in  Historiography

·  Samora Machel, Biography and other Historical Narratives

·  Samora Machel, Independence and Development

·  Foreign Policy of Samora Machel

·  Economy, Finances and Democracy during the period of Samora Machel

·  Samora Machel and Youth

·  Public History, Education in History, and the legacy of Samora Machel

·  Samora Machel, Local and Oral Histories

·  Preservation of Historical Patrimony of Samora Machel: Museums, Libraries, Schools, Archives and Monuments

Other themes that may be considered:

·  Education, Art and Popular Culture in Mozambique

·  Territory, Identity and Family

·  Religion, Spirituality and Society

·  Environment, Health and Sport

·  Gender, Feminism and Social Movements

·  Migration, Mozambican Diasporas and Development

·  Science, University, Employment and Development

·  Mozambican Languages and Historical Research

·  History, Information Technology and Communication

·  Collaboration and International Solidarity with Mozambique

The deadline for submitting individual papers, thematic panels, and roundtable proposals, is September 20, 2016.

Proposals for individual papers, thematic panels and roundtables must include the following information: Presenter(s)’ name(s); Name of organization(s); Email address (es); Title; Summary (250 words max.)

All proposals must be submitted in MS Word with Times New Roman font, size 12. Presentations may be in Portuguese or in English. Please note that simultaneous translation will not be available.

Submit your proposal via email to ohmoz2016@gmail.com with the subject line: “Samora Machel: Memory, Education and Popular Culture”.

The organizing committee will review all of the proposals received by September 20, 2016.
